Getting Ready for your digital meeting

As you get ready for your session, think about how private your space is. It’s helpful to know you can say things you might only want your therapist to know about. This could include:
  • A private space where no one can hear you
  • Having your back against a wall so people can’t see your screen
  • Being in a room with a door that closes
  • Use headphones so only you can hear the therapist
  • Using a microphone so you can speak in a quiet voice
  • Finding somewhere outside your home, like a parked car, that will be private

Physical Needs

What will help your body stay comfortable during the session? This could include:

  • Having something to drink
  • The screen is in a comfortable position
  • Space to move your arms or legs (if you like to do that while talking)
  • Tissues for if you cry during the session.

Regulation Needs

What helps you cope with emotions as they come up? This could include:

  • Art or a plant to look at
  • Tea to sip and smell
  • A photo of someone you trust
  • Blanket
  • A cushion or stuffed toy to hold or squeeze

Focus Needs

What will help you stay focused through the session? This could include:

  • Pen and paper for notes
  • Space to move your body while you talk
  • Fidget toys
  • Knitting
  • Removing distractions like notifications on your computer, your cell phone, or objects that are too absorbing.
